How to Motivate Children to Do Household Chores

How to Motivate Children to Do Household Chores

There are many things that children can learn from doing chores at home, as any Montessori school in Maryland would tell you. Household chores teach them what they need to know about caring for themselves, their family, and their home.

They can apply the skills they learn now to when they become adults, such as cleaning, cooking, and gardening.

The younger you teach your children how to do chores, the better. But how do you motivate them to do it in the first place? Our preschool has listed down some tips that may help:

  • Make it a game.
Children love to have fun, so finding a way to turn chores into games will help them get work done. Why not have a dance party while you wash the dishes or let them shoot their laundry like basketballs? Your children might end up looking forward to chore time.
  • Change it up.
Do you keep assigning your kids the same chores? If you keep doing this, then they will start finding them exhausting. Try changing up the routine every now and then so they will not lose interest. As an added bonus, this lets them develop skills in other areas.
  • Go about it as a team.
There are some chores that can be done as a team. Be a good role model for your kids and do chores together. Assign cleaning tasks for each member of the family and do your tasks at the same time your children are doing theirs. This is also one way to bond with them.
